Revelation Chapter 19 · The Marriage Supper of the Lamb

Revelation 19 delivers the triumphant climax that the entire book has been building toward. After the fall of Babylon in chapter 18, heaven erupts in fourfold Hallelujah worship, celebrating God's righteous judgment and the glorious marriage of the Lamb. The chapter moves from the wedding celebration in verses 1 through 10 to the terrifying appearance of Christ as the conquering warrior-king in verses 11 through 21. What begins as a banquet of praise ends as a battlefield of judgment, and the two movements are inseparable: the Lamb's marriage and the Lamb's war are one and the same event, seen from two angles. The structure of the chapter is deliberate. Verses 1 to 10 form a liturgical sequence: the great multitude's first shout, their second shout, the elders and creatures' response, a voice from the throne, and the great multitude's final Hallelujah followed by the beatitude of the marriage supper invitation. Then verse 11 serves as a hinge, shifting the scene from heaven's worship to heaven's army. The rider on the white horse is unmistakably Christ, described with titles and imagery drawn from the Old Testament: the sword from His mouth echoes Isaiah 11:4, the iron scepter recalls Psalm 2:9, and the winepress of wrath recalls Isaiah 63:1 through 6. The chapter closes with the destruction of the beast and false prophet and the slaughter of their armies, fulfilling the warning of Revelation 17:14.
